The unification of Germany was achieved through a series of wars against Denmark, Austria and France led by Bismarck. Most significant of the three was the Franco- Prussian war in 1870 which saw to the defeat of mainland Europe’s strongest power. The battle of Sedan was a key moment in the war which illustrated Bismarck’s strong leadership through the revolutionary Prussian tactics and the appointment of Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke. Moltke was crucial to the victory, using encirclement tactics to great affect and using railways to mobilise troops. This aggressive stance was underestimated by the French who’s overly defensive plans were no match for the swiftness and power of the Prussian army. As a result, Napoleon III was captured along with his entire army and decided the war for Prussia
