In 1973

In 1973, lives around the world were changed because of the invention of the mobile cell phone. Today cell phones are a necessity for life; everyone around the world has some type of cell phone. Cell phones help people stay in touch with each other around the world. Apps have been created to help people communicate and get the information they need on the spot. Cell phones shape society by allowing people to communicate around the world, however, too much use of a cell phone can lead to problems such as health problems, safety issues, bullying, people’s social skills, and distracted drivers.
Before cell phones existed people used maps to navigate around the world. When people would take a road trip they would bring an Atlas. Today, Apps are made to help people track their friends and family, and help them navigate. People can hold a mini map that will tell them when to turn and how long the drive from one destination in their hand. Cell phone producers put GPS, Global Positioning System, into their cell phones making it possible for people to find where their friends and family are in that exact moment. “Many cell phones contain GPS tracking systems that keep track of everywhere the phone goes. Thus, the average cell phone contains huge amounts of personal data that could threaten a person’s privacy if it is used the wrong way”(Nakaya pg.9-10). GPS in smartphones can benefit people but also can lead to concerns of privacy. The more people that use GPS the more they are susceptible to having their privacy corrupted by individuals that can hack into GPS servers.
If people can track other people at any time, they can use their location to exploit others privacy. “Tracking services help parents track where their children are at all times. Some cell phones come with software embedded that sends data to the phone`s location to centrally located servers through the mobile network”(ELENA Project). If parents can track their children using their phones, that means that a person can hack mobile networks and track people or their loved ones. Therefore, this idea of having a useful tracking device between parents and their children can be abused by people who want to take advantage of that information.
People can hack into the mobile networks and not only track people but can obtain their personal information like medical information, credit card information, and other information that people put on their phone. “Mobile phone companies can exploit the information that they gather and get a peek of the private lives of their customers. That information is liable to be sold to other companies for money which can be misused”(ELENA Project). Political leaders and other famous people can be in danger as well. If they use a mobile company that can exploit their private information for money, then terrorists can discover private information about generals, officials, and other high holding office leaders.
A person driving in busy traffic is already in a dangerous situation. They can be distracted by their surroundings or people that are also in the car with them. In addition to these distractions, other people driving on the road could be on their phones and not paying attention to what is going on around them making the situation even more dangerous. More and more people are using their phones while driving. They could be doing anything from texting, to calling another person, to surfing the internet or social media! There are so many no texting and driving campaigns due to all the accidents that happen every day.
Bullying has increased since cell phones have been released. Today it is easier to bully someone through advanced technology such as the internet, social media, text messages, and email which is more accessible through smartphones. People who bully other people can hide behind their phone. “Bullying by cell phone is often more harmful than face-to-face bullying for a number of reasons. First, unlike traditional bullying where the victim is usually safe when they go home, cell phone bullying can occur at any time of the day”(Nakaya pg.22). People who get bullied face to face usually get bullied at school or in a public place and then go home to their safe space. People who get bullied via phone don’t have anywhere to escape to. The bullying follows them everywhere.
Face-to-face confrontation is harder for people to bully other people. In today’s society, it is so easy to say hurtful things or make fun of people through social media or text. “Second, bullying by cell phone is often crueler because the bullies do not see their victim and can more easily say things they might be afraid or ashamed to say in person”(Nakaya pg.22). People can say hurtful words in person but people find it easier to say hurtful words through text or social media than saying it in person. Bullies find it easier to hind behind the phone, the stuff they say online they would never say to a person’s face.
Millions of texts are sent out daily, and in fact, trillions and even billions a week. Everyone is texting, whether they are texting their friends, family, co-worker, or their bosses. Cell phones have affected the way people text. Teens and young adults are the majority of the people who text. “According to a 2010 study by The Pew Center, the average American teenager sends more than 50 text messages a day. As a way of typing faster, many teenagers do not adhere to basic rules of spelling and grammar when sending text messages. Teens will often abbreviate words such as “too” with “2” and “you” with “u”. Those who spell in this manner may struggle at school when they are asked to write an essay with proper spelling and grammar”(McCoy). It is so easy to abbreviate words but people are so used to abbreviating that when it comes to writing a paper for school or writing something important for work, people’s grammar starts to decline and they face consequences like a bad grade or upsetting their boss. There are companies that have created a grammar and spell check for cell phones and computers, but some grammar and spell check programs are not programmed to catch abbreviated words. People still need to know how to use proper grammar because the grammar and spell check programs are not always right.
People call, and text each other every day. They use cell phones to discuss plans, exchange information, or just to talk with them about their day. This communication is fine and all but when it comes to discussing something that might be uncomfortable to say in person but too personal to say over text, people tend to text or just avoid it all together. People’s social skills have declined since cell phones have been able to text. People do not know how to have a normal conversation face-to-face. “Using a cellphone to converse can be easier than arranging to meet someone in person. However, a cell phone cannot replace in-person conversation, and a frequent phone or text messages user may feel awkward when presented with a situation in which she has to exhibit social skills, such as a job interview”(McCoy). Text messages can be misunderstood easier than someone calling someone. When someone calls someone else, the person that they are talking to can hear their tone and the way they say things. When someone sends a text message, the person receiving the text can take the messages the wrong way and it can lead to miscommunication.
Too much cell phone usage can be bad for a person’s health. The blue light, which is the light that electronics emit, can affect someone’s eyesight. “A study at the Yale School of Medicine, published in the March 15, 2012, issue of Scientific Reports, showed that such changes can affect not only brain development but also future behavior”(Netzley pg.15). Teens and young adults use their phone every day, if they use it excessively it can affect their eyesight and also the way their brain develops. Cell phones can change the way people think, or how they interpret things.
Anything can be harmful if it is used excessively but people can become addicted to their cell phones. People can become so addicted that people turn to violence or stealing just to get a cell phone. “Sometimes distress over not having a phone can develop into a phobia – a fear of being without a mobile phone or out of mobile phone contact(such as occurs when a phone runs out of batteries or a phone user cannot get a signal). This term for this is Nomophobia”(Netzley pg.41). Nomophobia can lead to major stress. When people cannot live without their phone, that should be a sign that they are addicted to cell phones. Cell phones are a major tool in today’s society but they should not be overused to the point people develop a phobia.
Everyday people around the world are using their cell phone. Cell phones have many advantages such as easy to communicate with others, information at your fingertips and most smartphones are basically computers. Cell phones their disadvantages also such as distracted driving, bullying, communication skills, lack of privacy and safety concerns are issues resulting in too much cell phone use.
